Speech, language and communication skills are the foundation for all that we do in everyday life. Without good communication skills children often fall behind their peers in later life. Many young children find these skills difficult and that’s where speech and language therapy can help.
A child with speech, language and communication difficulty:
- Might have speech that is difficult to understand
• They might struggle to say words or sentences
• They may not understand words that are being used, or the instructions they hear
• They may have difficulties knowing how to talk and listen to others in a conversation
Children can have a difficulty in one or more of these areas and it is vital that early identification and assessment takes place.
Colin Sure Start has a full-time Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to help discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s speech and language development. A home visit service is available to give advice and also consider the need for onward referral to other health services as necessary.
We also run Rhythm, rhyme and story time groups to encourage early attention, listening, turn taking, interaction and language skills. These are open to everyone and take place every Tuesday and Wednesday in the Colin area.
